It's an easy question. Yes, sex does sell. Some people find it vulgare and disgusting and would say that it's wrong and doesn't sell, but in truth, it does sell. Classy is usually connected with being sensual and sensual with sexy, just look at this add by Smirnoff. [link] And I bet your mind travelled through that very line of thought when you look at that picture.
One thing to be noted is that a lot of sexy adds are aimed at men, in the way that it usually has something to do with sexy women.(How that might be directed at females is that females might think 'Hmmm, would I look that sexy if I drank that?' ) But here's an Absolut Vodka add that is definetly aimed that females. (any really sensetive people should not look.) [link]
Yeah, sex sells, but I would really want to add a 'Y' at the end of that and make it 'Sexy Sells', which I think would be more pin-pointing what it is. To sell something it doesn't have to have sex in it, heck, doesn't even have to have a person in it, as long as it's something sexy that makes you think "Sex".
I'm not sure if many have noted this, but if you look as sports cars you'll find that they often are designed to look sleek and sexy. There's another thing where sex sells. Just because something doesn't scream "SEX!!" in your face doesn't mean that it doesn't add to a persons general sexiness if they have it as an accessory.
Porn is very straight forward, personally don't like it much cause to some degree the fakeness of it makes me sick in my stomach. But as for sex or sexual things envolved in comics and stuff, there's nothing wrong with that. Dragonball is suitable for kids and have many different points where a characters privates are visible, but it doesn't matter because that it's the point of it, the joke that is made about it is.
Something can be more or less offensive (in a sexual way) depending on how focused it is on the actual 'sexual act'. Like is I drew a picture that was about one of my characters nearly dropping her towel and some of her privates being visible, the privates wouldn't be the main part, the point that it's funny that she's nearly dropping her towel is. Thus the effect of the 'sexiness' wouldn't be as brutal as in some cases where the nakedness is the main point of the add, picture or thing.
I feel I've started to ramble here, so I think I'll stop here, for now. :3
That statement is actually laden with a double meaning, depending on the way you look at it.
First off, people who feel uncomfortable using the word 'sex' in a conversation often use lighter references and idioms, and forego the actual sentence, 'to have sexual intercourse', and just replace it with the abbreviated form, 'Let's Do It'. Hence, the sentence was aimed at asking the way in which you have sex.
Second, the question was aimed to asking the process on how you actually go about talking about sex.
I apologize in case you misunderstood my intentions or didn't get the question; you see I'm a supporter of double entendrees and wordplay. If I had a Scrabble I'd probably be a badass player at it.
In which way I have sex? Well, that is, as I see it, a very general question. I would just call in "normal" sex. But then again, you can always ask what "normal" sex is.
I tend to be very blunt when I speak about sex, the only reason I don't like using words like fuck is because I don't find them blunt, just crude and rude. That said, I tend to use finer words if I know that the person I'm talking to or a person in the vicinity is quite shy, or feel akward, about the subject.
Hmmm...I'm not sure if I really want to know that much, so early on. HOWEVER...!
It's refreshing to know that you support both blunt as well as finer mannerisms depending on your audience, AND you abstain from bringing in "effing" in the conversation. ...Unless you'd use it as a grade in how food or how intense the experience was.
Yes. I'm one of the people who feel a little awkward when talking about it as you might get to know...if we continue to stroll down this path, Fate willing.
But let's take a different approach now: what other topics do you enjoy talking about? I enjoy talking about movies, clothes, manga, philosophy, and music to name a few.
depends on who you sell it to. I tend to avoid it, especially when there's no justification for it. (I.E, porn.) but if it's essential to the rest of the story, then it's gotta be there, I suppose!
and then, there's the question of degree, censorship, and all that. you can have sex in a story/comic without it being porn so long as you're not too graphic, or it could be as simple as just having a character that would be considered 'sexy'. ...but yeah... I'm not sure which to vote for.
I'll try to reply to them when I get the chance! ^^
Here's something I feel needs to be referenced from the front page:
1 hour 31 minutes ago I just wanna ask... whats up with all of the sex polls XD everytime I get a poll from you its either about Sonic, your podcast or sex :S hahaha is a research project your doing or is just morbid curiosity lol
Keep the polls though, its makes DA more interesting XD
7 seconds ago I treat it as education and personal interest to see others opinion of it and how they react to it.
I mean if people go 'Ewww... Sex! Why talk about it?' then I feel that they immediately lack the maturity for proper discussion - unless they are totally under age.
I'm at the point where I feel that sex is an important and natural thing to discuss. I'm only human like you and anyone else on this planet. = )
I'm glad you find my polls interesting.
Don't worry there is also an additional reason why I created this poll - it will link up to my next Sonic 'gag' fanart in the near future. ^^ I gurantee that it will be one of those one hit wonder kind of Sonic fanart deviation like the 'Shadow brings Sexy back' one I did ages ago...
Well, form the huge volume of comments, I'm sure by now you sussed that a lot of people think sex sells. I think it does too. It's one of humanities favourite past times! A lot goes into the whole sex thing, marketing, time, etc. Porn, pictures, music videos, games, films... Sex is everywhere! ^^ Heck, even Sonic has a sex factor when you take Rouge into account. Or Shadow... XD
Sex does sell, but it doesn't mean you have to buy it! Thanks for such an interesting topic!
You know? Sex is always a seller, though my answer would be more a 'Yes' rather than a 'Hell yeah'.
As we all know, sex is a seller because we are bounded to it, it is a primary instinct, like breathing, eating, you got my point.
As for you, I just want to say, if you're gonna try drawing something 'suggestive' (as for you can't post sex here on dA), you can always do it. As for they say, "there's always a first time for everything".
Once in a Blue Moon. In other words it does, BUT you have to put that scene in the perfect spot for the stroy line.
Sometimes sex scenes can make the people go in awe, but again, SOMETIMES. Say for instense that we take Ashworth and Ruby as an example. They first meet and there were a couple of blushes. We may not know EXACTLY what that means ("love at first site"? maybe, but that's your story line), but later on through chapters, there will come a time when one admitts their feelings. Then, they fall in love and start kickin' it (if you know what I mean).
I thought we were talkin' 'bout if sex sells. And then I used Ruby and Ash as an example as a couple; possibly if were kickin' it together. Will sex sell for your characters as well is what I meant. (IT'S JUST AN EXAMPLE!)
....... I should get off this subject. T_T I mean yeah I'm young, but hello, it's all tv and internts falut. If they didn't put up playboy people would never have...... I'm gonna shut up now. I'm done.
Okay, I came REEEEEAL close to choosing "what does sex mean" just because I was cracking up. *cough* Anyway. Back to maturity. Yes, sadly, in todays society sex definitely sells-even if it's only subconscious. If something looks pleasing to us, we're drawn to it-even more so if it has that little hint of something, the little added bit that doesn't go too far but does just enough to draw the viewer in. It's just the way the mind works. Some people have more of a weakness to it then others, that's for sure...
Sex sells. In my opinion it's an easy way to sell something, because it's something that calls to any human.
But sometimes I find so many sex related things everywhere (films, advertisements, TV shows,...) that I feel it like an obssession in the society and makes me feel it empty, including myself. Sex is natural, but not the only thing in life!
Besides, a good work, one of those that calls the attention of everybody without the need of sex related contents is, in my opinion, a better work, because it didn't choose the easier way to the success and probably feeds the soul in some way. That also is powerful and very human.
Hope your new work at the casino is going awesome!
To be honest i don't see why it shouldn't sell. Not only the thought of it, such as pictures in advertising and what not, but also the act of it. I don't know if any of you have ever watched a show called 'en & Teller's Bullshit' but they do talk about prostitution in one of the episodes. They go on to say that sex can actually be a safe and profitable business as long as it's done correctly. I mean you hear all of these horrible stories about prostitutes getting picked up by their clients and never being seen again, so why not just make brothels legal? So long as they are a safe work place to do these acts. Seriously watch that episode of 'Bullshit' i was telling you about, you'll know what i mean. So yeah sex sells, and i don't see why it shouldn't. (Just so you people know, no i am not one of these people that shows skin and flaunts herself all the time, lol ain't got nothing to flaunt I'm jut trying to take this from a neutral standpoint)

As someone who draws adult art for people, yes it does XP. I don't really like this site much so I don't submit a gigantic chunk of my work, but where I do hang out a picture with sex in it gets a hell of a lot more attention than a picture which is completely clean. There are a few exceptions to that but all my most popular pieces, save a couple, are pornographic XP.
I am disappointed to say but since most men can't think of anything else it sadly does sell take X Blades for example, with a woman that fights wearing virtually almost nothing it sells well some reason 0_o, sometimes it makes me wonder why people are so concerned about it or even obcessed with it, I mean I don't get it since I am 22 and not had a big interest in it save for beautiful romance pieces I know I am strange
