Today marks a special day for me - as cheezy as it may be - my very first Sonic the Hedgehog (by Archie Publications) comic book issue has arrived at the doorstep to my residential address in San Francisco.

I've been living in the states for over 2 months now and I'm lovin' it. I've always told myself whenever I'm purchasing the comics back home in Perth, Western Australia - "Damn, those guys livin' in the states are sure damn lucky, they got the comics for half the price (and even less when bought on a special discount via subscription!) compared to what I'm payin' over here!"

Darkspeeds' first Sonic Comic arrival @ US address by darkspeeds

Now I don't have to live with that notion anymore - I'm finally here and enjoying my comics at ridiculous prices (got a year's worth of Sonic the Hedgehog & SONIC UNIVERSE for only $40.80 US, FORTY EIGHTY FOR FORTY FOUR ISSUES?! That's only NINETY THREE CENTS PER ISSUE (tax inclusive - BLIMEY HELL!! That's what I call a BARGAIN mate!! For comparison I paid about $5 USD per issue back in Australia!)

Not only that I get to also enjoy the convenience of not having to go to the comic book store every time to collect them (though I will still go visit comic book stores on occasion to get my magazines and extras, it doesn't feel right not supporting the local distribution/business at all levels, plus you get some exercise and meet some down to earth people in the process)!

Darkspeeds' Sonic and Megaman subscriptions by darkspeeds

I got myself copies of Megaman too, gonna make sure I do my research if I want to work for Archie (video game franchise/adventure department) one day!

Anyways like I said it's quite a special day, especially when it's a Friday (a day off from four day of classes per week - which means three days of free time to work on homework, and I got a TON of them at the moment...), plus I've officially reached my half way mid review point for the whole semester (gee whiz that's bloody quick! It's already been half a semester at school? It's amazing when you think about it...) For your information I'm getting very good marks for my mid-point review. It's not exactly reaching the A's I'm looking for but it's considered above average by the school's standards.

I'll be sure to remember this guys and gals, since I'm a huge fan of the comics and the guys behind it (aka Archie Publications team), that fact that SONIC UNIVERSE 57 is pretty darn special - the issue that commemorates a lot of things since moving to the United States to do my studies at the Academy of Art university.

*Happy sigh*... Alrighty then!

Time to share with you all more awesomeness! Check out what I did with my posters (from the SONIC SUPER SPECIAL mag: poster edition)!

So what are you waiting for? Go and show off how much of a fan you are of the Sonic comics!!

Oh and just for kicks, I got some more photos to share. In one of my painting sessions I had homework to finish off for Color and Design class, I had too much blue gouche paint leftover... So what did I do? Create a masterpiece of course! Check it out below.

Gonna leave a shoutout for :icondawnbest:

Be sure to check out the latest update from her fantastic Sylvanna series (collaboration with Ian Flynn, prime writer of the Sonic Archie comics) - the very first page is out and it's a great way to start the story!

Dawnbest's SylvannaOnline update by darkspeeds

Dawn also contributed to Archie Publications as of recent with a remarkable variant cover to SONIC UNIVERSE 57 - the very same issue that is special to me as of today! 8-)

It's very late for me to say this but I'll say it still: Welcome to the U.S. and good luck with your studies! :) I'm a fan of your artwork and have been inspired from your work ever since I started surfing the web as a kid years ago and discovered sonic fan art/comics being on the internet. I think it was around 2005 or so... Anyway, I wish you all the best in your art career! ^_^

One of my dream careers is to work for Archie too. I also want to work for Disney and to make a living on my own comics. What companies do you want to work for and such as well as wanting to work for Archie?

I'm a subscriber of the comics too. ^_^
Just SU and STH, I want to subscribe to the Mega Man comics too, but I also like the graphic novels with the behind the scenes features at the end of the books. I like seeing people's fan art in the comics as well in the monthly issues... Kind of a tough choice and I unfortunately can't do both. :P I tend to go back and forth. One story arc I get as a graphic novel while the other I get as the individual issues.

Hey there Mary, thanks for the welcome and wishing me luck on my studies!

Happy to know that you've been a fan of my works, I'm especially happy to know that my stuff has inspired you in some manner.

I see that your discipline is in Graphic Design, a great start and it is a career where I believe is much more secure than the arts/entertainment industry - advertising and marketing is needed in every business and there is usually an abundance of jobs related to that field.

Your graphic design work needs work if I were to critique from first impression, you got the basics like typography and such but I can't wait till you get into university degree program where you can excel those fundamentals taught in your associates and blow clientele with an awesome portfolio.

I'd like to work for Archie but probably at a freelance level for the moment. I'm happy being in California and perhaps one day I may very well work for the school at the admin/international students enrollment department.

I'm studying art as a lifestyle to be honest, to make a career out of it is a bonus but my priority now is to try to migrate to the States legally and fairly - also to find myself my life partner too, I'm getting to the age of wanting to have a family already.

It's awesome to know that you love and respect Archie comics, they are an amazing company with a strong reputation at what they do. Wish you luck getting there one day, if not Disney is also another awesome avenue to check out.

The only tip I got for you is - be prepared to show you best work and only your best. Go make yourself a kickass portfolio - the graduation paper does nothing in the art industry.

Well, Bean was as hilarious as ever.
The banter between Whisker's minions was funny as well, and we got to find out who his real boss is (the elusive Dr. Nega!)
Finally, Captain Metal is at his most badass version of himself here, and I can't wait to find out what his plan is in the next comic. :)
Also, that off-panel. Marine and Bean meet for the first time, and I think we all expected what was coming. :XD:

Hopefully they've gotten better since then.

Sounds like you're doing pretty well! I've always heard that the time that has to be put into art-majors is underestimated. It's easy to see why. (,)_(')

Have an excellent second half of the semester!

Yup, I hear ya!

You need to put in at least over 10,000 hours before you reach to near master level in your art. Really, it's all a matter of putting in the time and working smart while at it.

While as much as I'd love to show off my Sonic stuff (as I do have a decent collection of my own including a shirt I'm currently wearing as pajamas XD) I sadly do not own a poster...or even at home to show off anything for that matter except the shirt XD

But it's good to hear you're really enjoying yourself here state side. Now you're enjoying one of the big benefits to living here outside of continuing education... CHEAP SONIC COMICS~! 8D

Also I love the big mass of posters you have on your walls. Good grief your place looks more lively than my own. All I own are plain white walls that I'm not allowed to hang anything on. x_x

Plus I got your messages on Skype offline just now. XD You sent them just as I was getting to work and now I'm just seeing them~

Yeah man, California's awesome. Ain't gonna leave for a while at this point of time. ;)

That's pretty darn cute to know - you're wearin' Sonic T-shirt as your PJ's? Ha ha. :D

Yeah man, it's crazy how it's less than a dollar for each of the comics I'm getting by the doorstep... It's peanuts when you think about it. But I guess there's the risk of having the comics comin' in all ruffled and bent out of shape. X_X;

Anyways yeah I'm pretty busy atm, sorry if I can't get back to ya in the next couple of weeks!

You dork XD It's actually pretty comfortable to sleep in at night. Only downside is the shirt and shorts I have are notorious for being a magnet for pet hair. Making it hard to get it off sometimes outside of washing it. ^^;

It's good to hear you're doing well in your classes. So keep up the great work and maybe we can catch up sometimes on Skype~ Good luck Elson ^_^:hug:

I have those exact mini posters from the Sonic Magazine Special still mounted on my bedroom wall!!!
I don't know if I can show you a picture of my display of the Sonic mini posters via email, but if not that's fine.

I see that you are working with paint, though I can't tell if it's acrylic, watercolor or something else.
And I am quite impressed with your recent rendered figure drawings that I have great difficulty with.

Dude, no way, you're lying! lol! Not everyone one of those in that exact order?!? Prove it! And get yourself a free doodle! :D

I want you to post it on your account mate, so that I can showcase it! Just like what :iconKikiFlamer: and :iconezioauditore97: did, only then can you qualify for the free sketch! :giggle:

What I used for painting is !@#*#! expensive!

It's gouche.

I was wondering why Evan reacted amusingly after mentioning the medium I was using but god daaamn!! I already spent almost 150 bucks on 10 little tubes of paint.... Seriously!

And dude should you EVER have the time and money, invest yourself in a Figure Drawing class. It could a workshop that's available at your local community - just GO to one. Every awesome artist has sworn by it and it's true - you do learn a lot.

*sigh* OK. Maybe I may have worded my comment incorrectly.

What I meant was that I have those type of posters from the magazine, but I have arranged them differently.

& for the sake of this, I will eventually post the picture of one of my posters a few hours from now.

Good on you! How is the comic doing by the way? I stopped reading soon after Sally got robotized and a panel at comic-con last year talking of the future left me unimpressed. (Crap I've missed a year?) I heard they did an enormous retcon and it's pretty much a new world now. How's that going?

Ha ha... Dude, all I can say is: It's the best thing that has ever happened.

Trust me, pick up from issue 252 and continue to 253... It'll put a smile on your face with this refreshed perspective. It's only going to cost ya a couple of Starbucks coffee - well worth to convince or not on getting you back to reading the comics!

You know that was the thing I feared most...! Apparently I've been very lucky to get mine in good shape! I guess that's the another great advantage to picking it up from the store.

However I do store them up with plastic sleeves and comic boards to keep them in good condition - if it stands long enough with the comic board it should get back to it's flat/standing shape. :D
