Back To Square One (16th March 2010)

The following image will perfectly sum up/paint a picture of my 'recent' feelings for the GRAND HUNTER comic project that I've been working on for the past couple of months.

It's no surprise really - because of work, running errands back home, planning for a holiday to Bali, making application for a higher duties/supervisor role in my department of E-Gaming, chillin' out and relaxin' with family and friends - I didn't really get much time to dedicate to the comic series as of recent.

Not to say that is a bad thing because my priorities comes first and the comics are not a top priority in my life - it's really an extra as so to speak. My passion for drawing comics, cartoon and Sonic fan art is (as mentioned many times throughout my lifetime) a hobby and always will be. It's an escape from reality to put it in another sense - and it's a pretty expensive hobby since it takes up a lot of my time that can be spent more on going out and socialising with real people/networking and such - an all important step if you want to get into a relationship and have a family of your own one day in the near future.

But nevertheless the frustration comes at a time when I thought I had GRAND HUNTER ready and set in motion - I thought I was ready to deliver the pages to my fellow fans and readers of the series and get them engaged in the story of my comic creations. That is not the case as of today. Why? Well I want to be honest with you all...

I'm not satisfied with the work put into the comic project.

So to keep it simple the concept for the first saga which consists of 4 issues (each containing around 20-22 pages) was not good enough for my liking. There were plot holes. The bad guys weren't solid enough to hold an engaging purpose in the story and the plot was too complex. In addition I was still indecisive about the comic style/format to be used.

You can have a preview of my (to be scraped) works towards Issue 01 below. There are 6 pages (all except for the first) that needed to be coloured after I've done another 6 progressive pages in black and white sketch form.

Let me know what you think of the execution so far...

Issue 01 - Adventure In The Desert - Page 01 - To be scraped.

Now that you've read through my most recent stuff for the official GRAND HUNTER story now it's time to say good bye and say hello to something new and refreshing at the beginning of APRIL 2010. I will try to make that as my deadline for some fresh material on the GRAND HUNTER front. Hope you can join me then! ;)

Visual Step By Step for 'Mad Desert Dash' (12th March 2010)

Well you know me, lately at the end of each coloured concept piece (that's based off my original cartoon series) I post up a visual guide of the creation process for that specific concept piece.

Here it is in 4 easy steps:

02 --> INKING

04 --> SHADING

That is all for now! I've got a ton of work to catch up so if you'll excuse me I shall get back to you all when I'm free!

Keep on drawing and keep on inspiring! *thumbs up*

:bulletgreen: Concept preparations of 'new series' GRAND HUNTER (Chapter 01: 'Adventure in The Desert', FULL COLOUR - 22 page comic First Arc containing 4 issues. Progress - SCRIPT = 25%, COMIC PAGE = 15%

Oh dear...frustrated? That's the 1st time I saw it from you, Elson-boy.
The pages still looked nice, even tho you said they're just not working out, well except for the 2nd last one. But the front and the last one were pretty awesome, probably because of the details.

Plotholes? Like what? :-?
What about the bad guys? Did you plan to have multiple small-fries working for the big baddie in the end (like Baroque Works saga from OP), or were you going up in diferent direction?
That's some serious things to work on there, Elson.

I hope that the April brings some fresh breeze of inspiration to you. =)

Still, if you just happen to change your mind about the "proposal", you know where to find me, k? ;)

No worries dude, I will let you know Jaka. :D

Anyways disregard the plot holes - it's too much to discuss about and there's really no point to do so at this stage.

I just want to focus as much of my energy as I can about recreating the series with a fresh approach/perspective. *thumbs up*

Will, be waiting, Elson-boy. ;)

Anyway, there's also something that kinnda struck me down on negative side from the point of view that Ruby was considered the bad guy of the 1st issue, but that may be probably because I still got that hint from the TGAF, where she used to play as main protagonist of the series.
I mean, the logo clearly shows that Ashworth is suppose to be the main this turn, but well...

Also, with the refreshed approach, does that mean you'll remove Leo out?
darkspeeds Featured By Owner Mar 16, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
Leo is still for keeps. Ashworth is the main protagonist from here forth. But he is surrounded by support characters that act as main protagonists or support characters much like in Asterix's cases. Asterix would be like Ashworth in terms of role in the series.
Ja-The-Shadow-Hunter Featured By Owner Mar 16, 2010  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Well, that's good to know. =)
Because if I've learned anything (especially from Oda-sama), is that it's good to have support characters act as partly protagonists and have their rightful share of the spotlight all the time. Because if you look at DBZ, in the long run, only the main protagonsit always got all the fame, while the support characters became pretty much useless, which is still the common mistake in most of today's comix.
So lemme get this straith:
if Ashworth = Asterix
that makes Ruby = Ob- Oh dear! XD Ya better hide before she figures you out and gives you the "Paradise-you-know-what"! :lmao:

baw every artist (or any kind of human xD) gets stress from what they're going through @.@ i have mega stress and i'm also unsatisfied by my work actually :/ but i always love yours of course 8D and hmm wouldn't you consider to ask the fans if it were good enough? XD it's just my opinion is all and all are nice and amazing as always ya know :3 but it's better to think~<3 take your time okay? X3

|D; Ok- I'll admit that lil' doodle's pretty damn cute~

But that's understandable really~ :XD: Considering you're attempting to have a life, I'd say it's dedication for all the work you've done thus far~ (Not just in this comic, but all the pages you've done over the years.)

As far as being un-satisfied with your work, that's understandable too~ :XD: If anything it sets a mindset that you want to continue to improve!

However something really dangerous to keep in mind... when you do get back into the groove, make sure you're at least satisfied with the results you get, even if it's not "perfect". Otherwise it's just gonna take a bit longer to get it out how you want it to be, or you may end up changing it some much you'll just get more frustrated with it- You've shown in the past that you can set yourself at a good pace. Don't lose that~

And don't forget that you'll improve as you go along~ ;P

Also- life comes first~ It happens~

And on a small note- :XD: It seems like the more you gradually improve on your anatomy, the bigger Ash's 'bulge' gets. w Any connection~? :giggle:
darkspeeds Featured By Owner Mar 15, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
I wonder what happens when you put Ash, Fei and Ruby together for hentai/furry porn...

.... NOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo!!!!! *SHOT SHOT SHOT*

A-hem... Bulge *cough, cough* What am I sayin'? Thanks for the compliments and pieces of advice Jenise. :)

I don't have any probs with fanart/fancomics since I can easily free style it without any hassle on worry about plotlines and such - and it'll still get well recieved! But working on fan comics is too easy and not so much a challenge - since the concept is already based off an existing brand/IP.

But yeah when it comes to original stuff - that's where it gets hard and your expectations tend to be far superior to the fan works you've made in the past.

I'll try and find that 'good pace' and try to apply it with GRAND HUNTER + Cloud Raiders... I really need it right now. XD

Oh and yeah that doodle is pretty cute. X3
BlazeTBW Featured By Owner Mar 15, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
w~ Oh come come now~ Like Rule 34 hasn't been applied there before~ :giggle: I smell the burning of some secret sketches~ ;)

But if anything at least you're tackling the challenges comin' at ya~ :D If anything you got the heart for it! :sherlock: However, just because a it's a fancomic doesn't mean that it can't be taken seriously~ :XD: Then again that's probably stubborn me- (4 years and I still haven't even gotten a page done to exhibit... :plotting: I hope to change that this year with some practice I'm getting in. So far though just looking around I haven't seen anyone try what I'd like to do~ Hopefully that'll make things interesting, but if anything it'll be for personal entertainment. Babbling needs to stop now...)

Erm...yeah...|D; What you said.

 Anyway, good luck with what's to come~ :O You busy busy bum!
darkspeeds Featured By Owner Mar 15, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
To be honest I haven't drawn any Rule 34 for my cartoon series... Oh wait a minute... I sure did with once... O.O But that was done in jest/joking manner. :D

As for secret sketches - haven't any yet. Probably worried that I might have problems if I started drawing that kind of material!! LOL!

Yeah that's very true how you said that: "However, just because a it's a fancomic doesn't mean that it can't be taken seriously"...

Anyways I shall continue with my work - as much as I could. ;)
BlazeTBW Featured By Owner Mar 15, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
:O Well I'll be- you're more innocent than I took ya for~

... :XD: Then again as much work as you're putting into your pages, you probably haven't really given yourself time to think about stuff in those regards. Not that it's a problem or anything~

Alas, whatever you do, I can bet you'll be givin' it your all~ Good luck on it dude!

Yeah, comics can be really a frustation, doesn't right? Is exactly for that so I don't make them yet (lack of experience, free time, family problems, lack of confidence, fear of the future, etc)
As we all say, is completely fine with your plans about GH. Actually, all of this was been a surprise, I didn't thought that you was really making comic pages!

Anyway, time to be serious:
You are taking the right choice. Comics, honestly, are a great hobbie, but when hobbie, is put in last place in our list. Besides, when is about an original series, is extremely difficult to make a good storyline! Is much easier with fancomics, don't ya think?

I remember when before I had thousands of comic ideas for your series and none for me, lol.

Ok, I better stop talking about this. Let them say my opinion of the 6 pages.

So-many-detailed-backgrounds. WHOA!
I found funny the idea to start the comic with some insperate event that right then is told in days time before that happened.
Is really a nice work to say :) Keep the pages for some inspiration in future, maybe will be useful!

Ok, as conclusion.
Amigo, take your time that there's no deadlines :) Whatever you will present, sooner or later, whatever when, will be well received! Original art of fanart.
Up to ya!

Thanks for the encouragement and support as always Ana. Not to worry I won't be putting my hobbies/recreation on top of my list of things to do in life - though if I didn't need to worry about money and having a life then well I would have focused on it 110%... :D :giggle:

Yeah I will keep these comic pages for archiving purposes. It will at least give me an idea of what I've done in the past and have it compared with the new and completed comic series of that particular series! :D

XD Ruby was funny and I loved how Ashworth and Fei broke the fourth wall. I think the plot line from what I saw was fine just needed a bit of refining that's all.
SoftMonKeychains Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2010  Professional Artisan Crafter
How you did the background? That painting effect is very used for them and seems to work very well.
darkspeeds Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
Just the plain airbrush with very small opacity levels (at least 10%). You gotta experiment and paint naturally with the tablet by repeating strokes with medium-subtle pressure - you got a tablet right?
SoftMonKeychains Featured By Owner Mar 13, 2010  Professional Artisan Crafter
Not anymore. It cable was been damaged and fixing it revealed to be too expensive (out of garantee and so) I decided to not bother to buy another unless will be really necessary.
