A True National Hero (11th October 2009)

Judging by that headliner this is going to be a pro-Michael Moore post but please do read on (I promise to keep this short).

I went to my local Video Ezy store to borrow some documentaries that would cater my interest in America - the people, the government and the system that has kept them afloat as one of the most powerful and influential countries in the world.

I had that notion for a very long time since I was a kid but ever since learning more about the American way of life, the big companies that make huge profits that promise to distribute welfare for the whole community, the poor ethnic minorities that still roam around the streets, the war against terrorism, the Bush Administration, and the health system, oh the health system (let me get to that part later)... I started to ask myself the question - why?

I was at the documentary aisle at Video Ezy hoping that there will be answers to my special curiosity about 'America' and the 'Americans', I was hoping that I would find a film that would not sit through tedious old school textbook readouts of American history, I wanted a show and tell kind of feature film. In other words I wanted a program that would entertain as well as teach.

Out of the random I remembered this guy who appeared in the media a number amount of times throughout my life (probably only 2 times to be honest), whether it be on the flyers at my university, the entertainment section on my local newspaper, or the 12 O' clock news I watch during my shift at work.

His name was Michael Moore. I remember him well for the glasses, the cap, the beard/stubble, his rather humble change of clothes and his camera.

I heard of the titles he worked on: Sicko and Fahrenheit 9/11

I managed to borrow the former and another one of his works called Bowling For Columbine because they were the only ones available at the video store.

"Best Documentary Academy Awards", "Academy Award Winning filmmaker Michael Moore...", those were very highly acclaimed terms in the entertainment industry - that must mean something. I took the two DVD's home with a great sense of anticipation that Moore's films would be a delightful insight to the 'America' I was hoping to get answers from. The only problem is he did it too well and gave me answers that would eventually lead to more questions about the 'why' part.

After watching both films I am in the process of going to internet to buy his entire collection of films to continue educating my knowledge and passion for the old and new 'America'.

And I strongly encourage everyone to watch his films especially the ones that received critical acclaim from the media spotlight/film industry. It may or may not change your perceptions about America (especially those who are Americans themselves) but god damn will his films bring out the emotions (whether it be positive or negative) in you and touch your hearts. He certainly did touch mine.

For more information go to: MichaelMoore.com

Thank you and I hope he will inspire you as he did with me.

Please feel free to discuss and address your opinions on his films and his goals to make what could possibly a better America. I even made a poll (Who here supports Michael Moore?) to share insight about the community who watch me about their thoughts on Michael Moore.

In the real world there is no such thing as a black and white situation - so I would expect people to share their disagreements on Michael Moore also.

I think I've heard his name being mentioned once or twice, but I never looked into it. o-o Think you could fill me in? I'm afraid I don't have any access like what you're talking about save if I go on YouTube and try to find his documenteries or on Wikipedia.

The business with healthcare problems in America is beginning to be just as annoying as the Swine Flu craze that's been occuring. People expect Obama to become a genie and zap our country back to normal as if the war never happened, getting rid of our debt and problems in one fell swoop, when everyone whose mind is rooted in reality knows that it's impossible for damage this large to be corrected in such a short period of time. It's not fair for the ones who newly come into power to be pressured like this. I don't have any particular views on either McCain or Obama because I basically have no information on either of them to form any opinions. Sure, I could just go on Wiki or any news network but most of the time the stories are from the media, and as we all know the media likes to twist, bend, inflate and deflate the truth, distorting it almost beyond recognition. I don't like watching the news because it's so depressing most of the time (talking about people dying, the newest diseases, money problems, etc.), so I tend to get my information by word of mouth by the people around me, like my parents and classmates.

Flame me if you want, but I just want people to stop griping about how the president should do his job, who should've gone into office instead of him, pointing out all the flaws in the system/ideas, etc. If anything, people appointed to power are just figureheads. An example is the President. He doesn't have absolute power over the country, since that would make him a king and we believe one man shouldn't have that much power at his potential lest he fall victim to arrogance and corruption. Congress is the real part of power here, made up of people we elect into it that represent each state and it's opinion if the right people get in. The Senate, if enough people vote for it, can overrule the President's decision on a bill.
For the people that voted for and still support McCain, I'm sorry that things didn't turn out the way you wanted, but griping won't do a thing for you or to change what has already happened. For those that voted for and still support Obama, I'm sorry that he's had so many problems with people complaining about him and how he runs things, but people are entitled to their opinions and should be allowed to express them as they want, despite how we may think.

oO; That didn't sound too lecture-like, did it? Sorry if it did.
