Let's Draw Sonic - Part 01 by darkspeeds Let's Draw Sonic - Part 01 by darkspeeds
One day when I have the time I may make a book based soley on 'How to Draw' Sonic the Hedgehog characters (presenting the official 'adventure' style in the first book).

A simple, easy to learn, observational styled tutorial - using as little words possible to teach or give fans a guideline on how to draw their favourite hedgehog and his friends. :)

Who would like to get a copy from yours truly? :D

The more feedback I get on this I may seriously consider writing to SEGA of America on permission to publish this sort of recreational book for fans around the world! = )

Anyway these are commissions done for a dedicated fan of the blue blur in the United States named Andrew Paulson and I believe that his website 'Sonic Scene' will promise something amazing for the Sonic fan community in the future. Please do me a kind favour and check it out using this link! ;) [link]

To download these pieces individually for a print-out please visit the 'How to Draw' section on Andrew's Sonic fan site! [link]

Part 02 will be coming soon! *thumbs up*

It would be pretty cool if you made a How To Draw Sonic book. A year ago, I couldn't draw Sonic if my life depended on it! I think your drawings are really helpful, and now I can draw Sonic pretty good now, thanks to you!

Those are really effective, clear, and strong model/base/pose skecthes you use ^^
I like them, I might use something more clear like that in future, you make it look so easy

do you really draw everything like that or are you used to drawing them directly the way they are?
darkspeeds Featured By Owner Sep 5, 2008  Hobbyist General Artist
I used to go the latter buddy. = ) Now I realise that having guidelines will help you in the long-run (if you're drawing those characters a lot in a comic) rather than taking short-cuts by drawing directly without any planning. *thumbs up*

The finished product looks deceptively complicated in comparison to how simple the initial lines are. It makes it look like it was a lot more complicated to draw than it really was.

So you draw Tails' head as a circle...

I noticed that his head is a bit sqarish, so when I draw him, I use a shape in between a circle and a square for the head. You got the squarish head right, even though you used a circle. I can see that you did some "cuts" in the end to give the head its distinctive shape.

Expecting to make a book about drawing sonic? Gosh, that´s a lot!
I want to give you the advice that SEGA doesn´t accept requests of publising so easily, I remember that once, Fillipe (aka Yuski) asked them if could publish a Chaotix comic that he made (a quite very well done one) and they rejected. You know that companies are not the total trust, should be careful with them.
I´m sorry to not give a more entusiastic comment, I always fail to do that about sonic stuff.
My passion for sonic is the same like Fei to Ashworth, XD (the same kind of ressentment)

I´m waiting for TGAF uploads soon

Yeah, you were informed about the Sonic Art Contest for "Sonic and the Black Knight," right?
darkspeeds Featured By Owner Aug 31, 2008  Hobbyist General Artist
No I haven't been informed from anyone else other than yourself and Nintendomania on this deviation.

Could you kindly send me a link to the full details of this competition? :)
sonicchic Featured By Owner Aug 31, 2008  Hobbyist
Well, silly it's on the Sonic Stadium website! But to save you the trouble, I'll post the details here:

Hey Sonic fans! We are looking for artists to help us tell the story of Sonic in a special animated gallery in the upcoming new title, Sonic and the Black Knight (Wii, spring 2009).

Draw Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Amy, Shadow, Blaze and other characters (or any combination of one or more of them together) in your favorite scene from your favorite Sonic game and send it to us before the deadline of September 19th. We’ll choose 20 of the best to feature and each of those winners will also receive a free copy of Sonic and the Black Knight

Before you get busy with the paint, here are a few of the RULES:

YOUR MASTERPIECE: All the work submitted must be original and created by you. Art can be hand drawn or created digitally. Please keep the dimensions of your art to 11 inches x 8.5 inches. For hand drawn submissions color drawings on plain paper are best.

SENDING IT: Art can be sent electronically or by mail. If you’re sending your art by mail, please be sure to include your name, address, age, telephone number and e-mail address. (See terms and conditions for mailing address) If you’re submitting via this website, just click the link below and follow the instructions. Please send us jpg or png files and keep them below 1mb in size.

YOU, THE ARTIST: You must be over 13 years old to enter and live in either the United States or Canada.

DUE DATE: All entries must be received by September 19th. (Mailed entries must be postmarked by September 12th.)

Please read all the terms and conditions before you enter.

Good luck!

After a little bit, T-Bird did post that it was open to Europeans, too, even to Australians like you! He stated that the rules are similar to the U.S./Canada rules, so if you are going to enter, then get crackin' my Aussie Sonic admirer!

So if you want more info, go to the Sonic Stadium website, they have a link to go to the contest, view the rules, and view the procedure to send the finished artwork through e-mail through the website. I hope this helps and good luck!

Also, wish me luck, too! If you haven't looked at my page, I only have favored artwork. But after looking at the contest and finally getting the education at my college to know how to paint in Photoshop, I can finally work on something and post it properly here on my page(Stupid, crappy scanner at home! >=( )!

Thanks for the heads up! Someone sent me a note to confirm this and I have to thanks Adam and the others at TSS for their update on it! I may enter it but the chances are pretty slim since I've got much at hand to do! :D

They look lovely Elson. Very nice.

I like your idea of a How to book for Sonic characters. Your approach would work well for beginners who struggle with the basics. Not too many steps to confuse them, and not too few steps that they don't know where to start.

What I feel might be a usefully idea if you do decide to go through with the book is make an advanced volume for the more experienced people who could still use some help. Where the beginner volume would focus on proportions and basic features, the advanced volume could focus on ways to make different poses look good. Heh, it's just an thought.

Say, have you heard the latest on Sonic and the Black Knight? SEGA announced that they'll include a gallery based on Sonic's past adventures, and it's all going to be drawn by the fans! Sounds like something you could get into.

Nice. ;) And with that said I want people to develop their own 'best approach' in getting the finished drawing they desire! They don't exactly have to learn everything exactly like the book, I'm hoping I could encourage people to explore ways to have fun drawing something they'd always wanted to draw from the Sonic universe! = )

I haven't heard of the recent news about that competition/gallery thing that is open to fans! Wow that sounds pretty exciting! :)

Got back from Vacation for a week, any quick updates you have for me?

That's most cool to hear Cobalt. = )

Well updates will be made soon about my trip but I sure had an excellent time down at SoS in London and also spending quality time with friends there. The same goes with Melbourne and Singapore during my holiday trip overseas and interstate. ;)

Hope things are going well down your end! *thumbs up*

A very nice collection of developed character work in which you have shown the stages to creating the characters of a classic franchise.

The multiple collection of the stages expressed here towards the final design is nicely explored and the clean direction of the early stick figure to the clean and detailed models really shows just how you not only tackle them, but how you have shown a nice increase the detail that you apply towards your work.

The clean approaches that you have expressed in the final design are strong and really bring forth the atmosphere of the each single one presented. It's clear that you have a strong hand at shading and while your style of drawing the loveable trio is of a high proportions, it is the clearly your approach to tonal shading that takes the prize.

Keep it up.

Hey again Sam! Yet another detailed round of feedback from your end which is most cool to see.

There is much to learn and improve for myself on the areas you have suggested in your comment. XD

Cheers a bunch buddy and may you continue to keep up the splendid artwork yourself! = ) *thumbs up*
