Insight: The Emu and Wombat by darkspeeds Insight: The Emu and Wombat by darkspeeds
Hey guys! Here's a quick insight into the new plans for the chapters I have on the first two books!

I'm constantly changing and adapting to proactive ways to get the best out of the book contents.

I remember my publisher Dave from Local Act Comics suggested that I do a more simple cover with a strong emphasis on the title and logos. Also have less colours to avoid disorientation of the guy who's going to pick your book out of a thousand others in the shop.

I also remembered my experience of asking questions to Sydney's Kings Comics manager and also the recently opened ComicsZone in Perth (just visited the guys there today!) and they told me how having a visually-strong cover appeals to the crowd of comic-go-getters in general when making they make an initial purchase (usually the tourist or visitor - not the regulars though).

What they mean is comic covers with fancy and almost-state-of-the-art quality images or eye-candy covers that make you feel it is worth looking into - something attractive and colourful.

With this contrasting opinion from the experts who sell the stuff (very friendly people too ^^) I took it into consideration for my future covers. I can start appreciating that the first trial run cover sucked majorly and needs refinement.

I'm going to stick to Dave's opinion about a more clear, simplistic and meaningful approach and use less detail on a background and focus more on what appears from the front - one the most important thing in the story - the characters themselves! = )

So yeah I reckon that looks pretty sweet for a cover for the second book entitled: MY FRIEND IS A WOMBAT. I'm pretty excited about how I'm going to colour this. = )

Hope you have enjoyed the insight! It's something I love to do and that's sharing stuff from behind the scenes that may help other artists to become inspired about publishing their own comics one day! ^_~ *thumbs up*

I see an improvement in anatomy. 8D I like this approach--simple but more meaningful. Nice. :D What's a story without characters? I think it's good that you show that.^^ Also, I'm loving that smile of Ash's too! X3

I knew that I had seen those reference poses before! Yeah! I favorited a lot of months ago this one [link] from the same artist.

I needed some references of hands and feet which are my weakest points in drawing the human anatomy. They are very instructive!

nice.......but people tend to get confused on what to drw as a cover.....(at least to me)
i was wondering on something for a billion years and thought that you might know.....
how do you make logos like day?
it looks so pro......but i never had a thought on how to make it....
and after that how do you put that same logo on different drawin?
cause i know they definetly dont wanna redraw the logo....
really im clueless....im yearning to get a book soon...

To put your logo in any new image/file all you have to do is make a transparent version of it (seperate file altogether). Then whenever you need it load it up and add it as a new layer! = )

You can do this if you have a graphics program such as Photoshop! ;)

Well, most comic books/manga sell on... hm... how should I put this? On instinct, if you get what I mean. So I think you have the right formula here!

For instance, I absolutely love the Bleach cover - A single character in a usually exciting pose with a white background. All in vibrant colour! I remember buying the fruits basket series on a similar mindset aswell... I was just compelled to the characters on the front. However, juxtaposed with the likes of busy covers like the ones appearing on, for instance, NANA, I know which one I would most likely buy on a reflex.

So I think simple design and eye catching characters is the key to drawing in those new buyers that I'm sure you want. And what kinda comic artist doesn't want their comic to sell, hmmm? :D

oh, and can I just say before I sign off how much of an improvemnt you've made when it comes to Ruby's breasts!

Looking forwards to the new comic pages and Ashworth showing up!! Keep up the awesome work ^_^

Yeah I have an appreciation of the BLEACH styled comic covers! It's pretty ace to see the individuality of each new book splashed with a character that is original and attractive to the reader. :)

Thanks a bunch for your feedback on what you think of comic covers and such Ao-Okami! And also thank you kindly on your compliments on the improvements on Ruby's breasts. I'm starting to look into the dynamics of human anatomy and hopefully I will continue to improve as I go along this trip of illustrating the story. ;)

Finally, Ashworth gets into the comic! That makes me happy; Ash has been my favorite ever since I found your work.
The poses are nice indeed, and I really like the lineart. Plus, I must say, Ashworth looks smexy, which is something I don't say often! Sound the fangirl squeal!!!
Anyway, nice job!

Ashworth's grin makes me happy. It's infectious!

I notice that Ashworth's chest fur keeps getting smaller and smaller.... Anywho, I love the poses, a lot here, and the poses really work together. It makes it flow and gives a sort of natural look between Ashworth and Ruby.

Yes his chest fur is getting smaller and smaller! XD I don't know why... Could be the reverse of a growth spurt that he is having.. O.O XD

Thanks for the feedback as always Lin! :D

Is a great new to know that you are getting great advice from experts
For now I will get instruction from an expert in manga from Coimbra (one of the biggest Portugal´s cities) and assistance from a manga store in the same city.
Is not a lot, but good for a beginning.

Will be not be big deal, I will like to keep learning from you, observing and listening your advices and hints

Yeah, but as well, Portugal is not an indicate country too, planning to become a profissional comic artist is a hopeless dream here.
Staying in the contacts just here is no use, so for now, in the next years, I will try to gain contact of profissional european comic artists, starting with a german one that one friend told me few time ago. But I will do so as well get more and qualificated projects.

Awesome! That sounds good for prospects Ana!

The European comics I've analysed over the years have been more abstract styled and unique with some rather deep moral messages in their stories.

Very interesting... I should ask my local comic retailer about covers to see what he says about cover design... This cover already has a lot of impact as-is. Did you draw that pose collection? It dosen't look like your style.

(don't forget to put an apostrophe after "Darkspeeds", to make it possessive...)

now I'm just talking for the sake of it.

Yeah EvanStanley I highly recommend you just go to your local comic retailer and get some honest advice on how your own comics can best sell in store - when it finally reaches the bookshelves.

I'm sure you'll have a friendly chat and as well as an insightful one when you initiate the conversation - it'll be a great experience (much like how I had with the ones back in home and also while overseas!) = )

Hmm I will use the apostrophe like you asked, I was actually in need of a suggestion on how to get my name on there effectively cuz it looks a little empty at the minute. XD Thanks for that!

And no I didn't do that pose collection! No way in a million years. XD I've got lots to improve! ;)

I think you're one of the first Sonic artists/anthromorphic artists to have utlised and dared an approach to illustrate a slightly more 'humanistic' anatomy on Sonic characters - I found it pretty sexy which is why I'm applying it to the TGAF characters (it's also a way of avoiding complete copyright infringements on from a design aspect POV).

BTW if you don't mind me asking, what's your reaction if people say you are a 'Sonic' artist? Would you feel offended? A little disapointed? Or you are not bothered at all? = )

I'm not bothered by people calling me a "Sonic Artist", It's actually what I think of myself as. Drawing Sonic characters well is actually more difficult than it might seem. (doubly so with the more human figures). I just hope I can someday create my own word and characters that are just as entertaining and fulfilling for me.
