Ashworth [character development pt.1] by darkspeeds Ashworth [character development pt.1] by darkspeeds
This is where we go up close and personal with Ashworth, starting with 2 of the 10 questions answered in developing your original character.

I utilised the cheat sheet based off Chris Oatley and Lora Innes' Paperwings podcast - Episode 8: Ten Questions To Ask Your Characters To Make Them More Dynamic & Believable

I've been listening to their shows lately and the content is jam-packed with great advice for those interested in elevating visual storytelling. Also their shows are incredibly humble, resourceful, and entertaining. You guys are amazing and I will continue to illustrate the rest of the questions after I'm done with some commissions!

If you were asking him that question?

From memory, he'd very likely say 'yes'. He's not too comfortable talking about it either.

Now that seems like a traumatic experience... Was Ashworth by any chance raped, as suggested in that strip?

It's up to your interpretation. ;)

More will be revealed when I work on a proper story featuring Ashworth in the near future. Right now I'm taking baby steps to flesh out the fundamentals of character/world/story building.

For a person to go through this sanity and trust-destroying experience at such a young age makes the characteristics of his adult form very understandable.

I'm not familiar with Ashworth (yet) beyond this and some other artwork. Is it an original concept or a fan-made story of something?

Great panel work!

The original goes way back when I've published a 196 page graphic novel featuring the adventures of Ashworth and Ruby - fortune hunters destined to find the greatest treasure on the planet (super cliche right?).

Here are some sample pages in colour that continued after the graphic novel: Entering Port City by darkspeeds Ma Fei Vs. Corny by darkspeeds

Also it was an original concept and one that don't intend to continue because it lead to nowhere. lol

I'm starting afresh with characters redesigned and re-purposed for Edenspell.

Very interesting Elson! I was a bit surprised to see such a dark, gritty thing coming from you! I love seeing the character growth here, and the action in these panels is superb! Really enjoying your work as always.

Thanks Lin!

Can't wait to see you more of Ma Fei later on! I've pictured him as a highly arrogant martial artist who seeks to best anyone in mortal combat. However his arrogance becomes his greatest weakness and life comes tumblin' down when he becomes blind. Dreams can be shattered in an instant and I want to make him realise his error. I want to break his pride, I want to break him.

That is where the interesting part comes in - how does he, at present, become a calm and collected guy who eventually made a name for himself in Edenspell - nicknamed silent wind - for his indomitable close quarters combat and assassination techniques

From wild to tamed, from moving freely and constrained to calculative and composed. This will be one of those things that motivated me to develop Fei's character, can't wait to show it! :D

It's been fun experimenting with the Cintiq - I think the digital approach is workin' pretty swell!

*gasp*

Only 57 hours to go!! Will the campaign hit the 75K mark?!

Exciting times! I have a good feeling it'll get there! Keep the faith, that's my DK power - optimism. ;)

:wow:

My favourite panels are the last one where everyone's in the room; I'm loving the detail on the furniture <3, my other favourite panel is where Ashworth is swinging the battle scythe (please correct me if I'm wrong) and slashing his opponents and their weapons.

I'm loving the limited colour palette scheme within the panels. :D

I'm seriously loving the change within the characters; though I do feel sorry for Ashworth and what happened to him in the past, no child should ever have to go through that kind of trauma. :(

You are absolutely correct - it's a scythe that he's using! XD I'm still deciding whether that is his primary weapon to carry around.

And thanks for the feedback overall! :D

Have you considered NOT giving him a weapon at all? He seems like the type to have a more heat-of-the-moment kind of attitude, plus it'd be fun to see him duke it out as he goes along. Personally a scythe doesn't seem like a weapon that reflects his personality all too well...but in a pinch anything works, so it balances it out for Ashworth here and now.

Plus, if he has weapons training he could benefit from having to adapt between short, medium, and long distance combat.
So far the art and the mood are excellent--good luck with this project of yours, and hoping to see future updates!
Nod

It's fantastic that you pointed out about his weapon choice, I'm still in the ideation process for that one. ;)

I have explored how he is that kind of guy who doesn't appear with a weapon at hand at all times. It's definitely an interesting prospect!

In fact I just had an idea a couple nights ago on how that came to be story-wise, hopefully it come out meaningful after experiencing such a tragic period of adolescence.

Wow! Thanks for the reply!:D (Big Grin)

Wait, that happened when he was an adolescent?? He looked younger to me...:( (Sad)
(I guess it was the angle that made me think that.)

I'm betting he would look so bad-ass when he's tensing the string on a bow & arrow and he's taking aim.Meow :3

He's gone through some very dark times at a young age. How he was able to cope with the psychological trauma and how he could overcome his fear is going to be an interesting aspect to develop and visit as I illustrate the story to Edenspell.

Well that's some refreshing coverage since last time in years!
I did noticed your style has changed a lot, it turned quite realistic.
It's great to know some of us can keep up with original work, while others of us just....can't fit in and thus now moved to entertaining with fanworks instead. I somehow feel bad to abandon my own original made-up universe after so many years but when we just find out we can't do it, I can just accept it. Glad to know you chose to keep on!

To be honest there is nothing wrong with doing fan-art or fan-comics, it's really boils down to choice.

The other thing that drives one to do fan-art is how it can be alot of fun to show a different perspective to an exsiting IP and embracing visual storytelling at the same time.

I've gone down the fanart route and now I've aged to a point where fan-comics don't feel as rewarding as it once used to be. I feel that the real challenge is to create your own stuff from scratch and these past few years I'm still finding it very frustrating to get it right! However I feel like I'm at the point where I can safely say that I'm heading in the right direction for my next series and I can't do this without some help along the way!

Thanks for the encouragement and I hope that one day you'll find the time, energy and joy in creating your own original stuff!

The problem with creating original stuff is that it takes ALOT of patience and nurturing for the fan-base (and yourself, the artist) to embrace. It's a lot of hard work with not much feedback in return compared to fan-art in the early stages. When you break that point it's going to be probably the most rewarding thing you'll ever do, creatively, as a comic artist/illustrator. :)

Nah, I'm not cut for that. Not everyone is, I found that in the hard way. Plus it's not where I'm going for a living, it's just a hobby, a way to cope life and have fun, nothing else matters. Regardless if original or not. I'm not interested anymore, simple as that. Fanart may not feel rewarding and fun for many artists, but still does the trick as hobby for me and won't end anytime soon. My dreams, work and inspirations don't swing in that direction, and if that means I'm "wasting my skills" on fanart, let it be. I don't really care.
I'm not a comic artist anyway. I'm old enough to realize what's the best for me. And I know, better than anyone else, that original series aren't my thing. They never been, actually. Thus why my hesitation and lack of motivation. I just took a long time to have the heart to confess that to myself and everyone else.
And I'm fine with the decision. Happier, actually.

I'm glad to see you can handle the pressure and high expectations from your public and go on with our own projects. But please understand some of us can't take it, won't ever will and are fine with it.
